Nov 12, 2020

We’re looking for a keen individual to get stuck in with our radio operations specifically to help us with our news output. This creative driven individual will work within our radio team collating, writing and presenting the daily news output along with another journalist on a rotation basis each week for Decadance Radio, which is a fresh new station for Brighton & Hove.

The role will involve researching stories in the news both nationally and locally, writing scripts for broadcast, editing any audio associated with the stories and presenting short bulletins during on-air shows. There may also be some editing of stories online to go with the on-air bulletins.

The station is run by a great team who are all Brighton born and bred and the successful candidates who will be working as part of a small team will be working alongside the Music, Content & Programme Director who in his time in radio worked at KISS FM UK and BBC Radio 1Xtra, so there are great opportunities to learn and develop whilst you’re with us.

This role is a voluntary position to begin with for the first 3-6 months to go alongside a media course from degree level or higher. There will be a review at the 3-month and 6-month periods to go over the placement and to look at how the role will further develop according to the needs of the station.

A strong creative flair when it comes to ideas along with an ability to source a good solid local story or have the ability to take an idea and turn it into a feature or story is important.

Strong writing skills is a must and the ability to have low level audio editing skills to use in bulletins where needed. Having the ability to work under pressure and hitting deadlines for bulletins is essential.

Previous news reading experience is advantageous but not essential as you will be trained throughout your time with the station.

Some experience within a news and content environment is essential and you must be working towards a news or content writing qualification or have some past media experience.

Knowledge of the basics of news reporting is required so there is a foundation to build upon whilst you are spending time in this position.

Basic proficiency in PC & OS systems as well as a confident ability to use the Adobe suite or at least Audition for audio editing. You are also required to have a strong knowledge of using the Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.

You must be able to approach the role with an ability to own it and work unsupervised at times. You must be able to work alone and give occasional updates to the rest of the team about progress.
